dbWindow 3.0 removes all the stumbling blocks to using a database with MicroStation
Now, not only can you set the linkage mode, you can lock it down so that dbWindow always ensures that your linkage mode is set accordingly to reduce operator error.

Users are often unaware of how when a user attaches a linkage in NEW linkage mode, a new data record is inserted into the table (except for the MSLINK number, an exact copy of the selected record is made). To complicate matters further, MicroStations seed DGNs all have the linkage mode set to NEW. Unless you are aware of this, you could end up with many new unwanted records in your table. With dbWindow, you can set the linkage mode to DUPLICATE and lock it to always be DUPLICATE. Then when a user opens a new DGN, the user doesnt have to remember to set the linkage mode to DUPLICATE - dbWindow will do it!
These items are located on the user preferences dialog for quick change of use, but are also on the password protected settings dialog so that the database administrator has the option to override the user preferences.
You need to download dbWindow to try all the powerful features.
